Why Do I Need Sunscreen?

Whether it's playing sports, going on hikes, or simply enjoying a day at the beach, men often tend to spend more time outdoors during the summer months. While soaking up some sun may seem harmless, it's important to understand the effects of sun exposure on skin, and at SLAM, we’re here to help you protect your health and your skin!

How Sun Exposure Affects Your Skin

The most obvious result of too much sun exposure is sunburn. Sunburn occurs when the skin gets too much UV radiation, causing redness, pain, and even blistering. Sunburns not only cause discomfort, but they also increase the risk of developing skin cancer because of decay in the cells and layers of exposed skin.

Additionally, that same radiation and cellular decay from prolonged exposure to the sun can cause premature aging. UV radiation damages your skin's collagen and can also negatively impact your body’s ability to produce collagen too. This collagen deficiency can lead to wrinkles, fine lines, and age spots, not only can make you look and feel older, but it can also increase the risk of developing skin cancer because your skin has fewer defenses against harmful cells.

Lastly, the most serious effect of sun exposure is skin cancer. There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma, and these can range from easily treatable to life-threatening if left unchecked. The risk of developing any of these cancers can be increased by radiation damage and sunburns, so the key to staying healthy is preventing sun damage!

How Skincare Helps

Of course, protecting your skin from sun damage is highly important, but setting yourself up for success in staying healthy and keeping your skin looking great requires a good skincare routine, too! Dry, inflamed skin is more likely to develop wrinkles, and those with oily skin may be prone to breakouts that cause scarring, too, so skincare products that keep your skin clean, hydrated, and clear will ensure that you are less likely to experience premature aging, dryness, wrinkles, or skin cancer.
