Why Do I Need Sunscreen? Even If I Don't Burn | SLAM

Oct 01, 2026

Rarely burn? You still need sun protection. Learn why sunscreen matters, whether clouds change the plan and how to build a simple outdoor routine.

Sunburn is a warning sign. It is not the only sign that the sun is affecting your skin.

You finished a round of golf without turning red. That does not mean your skin got a free pass.

If your sunscreen rule is "only when I burn," you are checking for one effect of ultraviolet light and missing the bigger picture. Sunscreen is useful on the ordinary days too: walking the dog, watching a game, working outside or waiting through a long round.

Why do I need sunscreen?

Sunscreen helps protect exposed skin from ultraviolet (UV) rays. Too much unprotected UV exposure can cause sunburn, contribute to premature skin aging and increase skin cancer risk.

Used correctly alongside shade and protective clothing, sunscreen is one part of reducing those risks. It does not make sun exposure risk-free.

Does not burning mean I am protected?

No. How easily you burn is not a complete measure of UV damage. People of every skin tone can develop skin cancer, and the American Academy of Dermatology recommends sun protection for everyone.

A tan is not proof that your skin is safe either. The AAD describes tanning as a response to skin damage, not a healthy shield.

Do I need sunscreen on cloudy days?

Yes, if you will be outdoors with exposed skin. Clouds do not block all UV rays, and cooler weather does not switch them off.

Use the same practical check: which areas are exposed, how will you protect them and when will you reapply? Your ears and the back of your neck count even when the beach is nowhere in sight.

What if I am only going out for a while?

A beach trip is not the threshold for wearing sunscreen. The AAD advises applying it to skin not covered by clothing when you will be outside.

Keep the routine simple: apply before going out, follow the bottle directions and bring it with you if you will need another application. Add a hat, protective clothing and shade rather than relying on sunscreen alone.

What should I actually look for?

Choose broad-spectrum protection, which covers UVA and UVB rays. Read the SPF, water-resistance information and directions on the label. Water resistant does not mean waterproof.

If your plan includes swimming or sweating, the label's time limit and reapplication directions matter. A higher SPF does not turn one application into an all-day plan.

Make the habit easier to keep

Choose a format you can apply generously and evenly. If fragrance bothers your skin, choose a fragrance-free option. Scent is a preference, not protection.

If you like cologne-inspired scent, SLAM's Men's Cologne SPF Spray is a broad-spectrum SPF 50 option with 80-minute water resistance. Prefer lotion? MysteryMan Sunscreen Lotion is a rub-in option. Follow the directions on your own bottle.

The point is not collecting bottles. It is protecting the skin you actually take outside.

Questions, answered.

Do men need sunscreen?

Yes. Gender does not exempt skin from UV damage. The AAD recommends sun protection for everyone.

Do darker skin tones need sunscreen?

Yes. People of all skin tones can develop skin cancer and experience UV damage.

Does sunscreen replace a hat?

No. Use sunscreen alongside shade, protective clothing, a suitable hat and UV-protective sunglasses.
